The Strippening

By The Megapope   Posted at  21:16   Warmachine No comments

Well folks, I got there in the end. Took me roughly five hours spread over four days and two litres of Simple Green™ but all of my Khador models have been thoroughly cleansed of their old paint jobs.

Naturally I must post about it for future internet achaeologists to puzzle over. Who was this strange beardy man? Why was he holding a toothbrush like that?

So if you haven't done a mass stripping of models before, this might well be informative. Or at least mildly entertaining.

STEP ONE, THINGS YOU WILL NEED.

Black aprons are so in this season
An appropriately dashing cleansing uniform! I found an apron to be pretty useful as stuff flicked everywhere during the frenzied scrubbing. Rubber gloves are also your friend here, as Simple Green™ will otherwise leave your unprotected meat digits looking and feeling like mummified prunes. Also an old toothbrush, for the actual scrubbing. PRO TIP: don't use it again afterwards.

How can she not be excited?? It's just so piney fresh!!
Here is my beautiful assistant posing with the Simple Green™ that I got from the local home depot store.

A red bucket would have gone faster, but we use what we have.
You will also need a well ventilated bathroom or workspace, a bucket, a secondary container (not shown) for working in if you're going through a lot of models at once, and the ability to sit by yourself scrubbing little metal robots like a crazy person for extended periods of time.

STEP TWO: GIVE IT A BIT OF A SOAK, JIMMY.

It's a metaphor for human existence.
All of the models! Into the bucket! Easy!

This isn't a metaphor. It's just a bucket.
Dump two litres of piney fresh Simple Green™ on top! Give it a bit of a stir!

Kinda like the Manawatu River. OH NEW ZEALAND IN-JOKE TIME.
THE NEXT DAY. Oh look it's gone dark and dubious looking! That's how you know the magic's happened.

STEP THREE: GETTING JIGGY WITH IT. (nah nah nah nah nah-nah-nah nah)

Mmmm sludgetastic
It dissolves fake snow! It dissolves super glue! The models came apart as I cleaned them! This was okay, as I planned to repose a bunch of stuff. But I did have to be careful not to lose any tiny fiddly bits in the increasing amounts of sludgey muck accumulating in the bottom of the tub.

"Rubber duckie, you're the one..."
Here is an exciting action shot of some models in the tub. I kept most in the bucket soaking, but tipped a bit of Simple Green™ into the secondary tub to facilitate the scrubbing process. I really can't stress enough at this point, wear gloves.

"Dude. Where the fuck are my limbs?"
This is what was left of the Behemoth after a vigourous scrub. The rest of it was sitting in the tub, it just came apart pins and all. Simple Green™, DON'T MESS WITH IT FOLKS.

STEP FOUR: WALLOW IN YOUR NEW MINIS

The bitter aftermath of the piney fresh destruction
Make sure you clean all your bits with soapy water to get rid of any Simple Green™ residue! I hear it can mess up your undercoat and painting otherwise. SAFETY FIRST KIDS.

As you can see, there are still some bits of red paint in the nooks and crannies of some of the models, that would frankly have taken more hours to get rid of than I was willing to put in. My tactic is to scrape off a bit more with a knife during assembly stage (it comes off pretty easily) and then if there's any tiny bits still showing in recesses after undercoating, just use some watered down black paint to mask them off.

Get your jack pieces here! We got big ones! And, uh... more big ones!
Important after doing a huge batch! Go through all your parts and make sure you haven't lost anything. I used a colander to pan through all the sludge and crap like a gold miner before throwing the Simple Green away, and I found quite a few tiny metal spikey bits and other little parts that had fallen off. Amazingly (for me) I managed not to lose a single piece during the cleaning, pretty much because I was anal retentively thorough.

He likes long walks in the park and throwing shit into other shit
Aaaaaand here's the Kodiak ready to go. Pinned, cleaned, glued and undercoated.

He just likes killing people. What a bastard.
Aaaaaaand here's a blurry photo of the Butcher, likewise all ready to be painted. VICTORY FOR THE MOTHERLAND.

Thunking

Some random thoughts on my lunch break...
  1. I need me a display case. So bad.
  2. Rereading Dan Abnett's Know No Fear, I feel the urge to paint something blue! Luckily I have a cupboard full of space marines for just such an occasion.
  3. REALLY need a display case.
  4. Pretty keen to start making some Warmachine scenery soon. Big communist style statues? Yes please! This one's pretty cool.
  5. I hate stripping models. So very much. I've been at it two nights and I'm about halfway through the pile that's sitting in the bucket of Simple Green. Expect a blog post about this in piney fresh detail soon...
WOOF
And just to include something visual, here's my mostly finished War Dog.

Khador Progress Report

By The Megapope   Posted at  23:23   painting 5 comments

So this evening I got Sorscha finished up. Hurrah! Perfect way to deal with feeling poos and coughing a lot.. sit in a warm lounge and paint. One warcaster down, 4 to go!

Also a bunch of other things that I will now regale you with IN SEXY PICTURE FORM.

Spell casters, letting you dodge painting eyeballs since ages ago.
So I managed to take a bunch of not very good photos of my freshly painted warcaster, and the above one is the best you're gonna get. The main thing I wanted to show was her GLOWING BLUE EYES OF POWER™ that are basically just two dabs of Ice Blue because I glued her arm on before painting her face, and those eyeballs are hard to get to.

If I was more confident I'd try out an actual glow effect around her eyes, but I'm not in that league yet.

However!

Now 100% less squinty
Just look at that grizzled beardy face. And two eyes! Neither messed up! Amazing what a good quality fine brush can do. Also I'm getting better at painting with a steady hand methinks. I am so pleased with these eyeballs that I'm tagging this blog entry under 'achievements'. Oh yeah that's right.

This leads us into a group shot...

"Your arc node just exploded? Nope, wasn't us..."
I'm leaving them as is for a while since I haven't quite decided exactly what level of highlight I want to bring them up to. As I said in ze last entry, I like the darkened look of them, but I do feel like they need a bit of touching up before I can send them off to blow the brains out of the ungodly.

But wait! There's more!

"This isn't my first choice of profession. I wanted to be a ballerina."
The Destroyer is base coated and all inked up. Next will be the green blending on all the flat surfaces plus a few line highlights here and there.

And finally, good folks of the intertubes, I leave you with... THE HOUND.

Unkown to Sorscha, he's having a love affair with the Juggernaut's left leg.
Finally got round to gluing it onto the base. Look at the bloody size of that thing! Sorscha could comfortably ride that mutt into battle without even bothering to hold her feet off the ground. I went for a less extreme pose than the default 'just landed and have both back legs in the air' which I wasn't a huge fan of. Looking forward to painting him up, in fact I might do him next.

MEGAPOPE OUT.

I Ink, Therefore I Am

Work is kicking my ass but lo! I bring you Widowmakers progress! And thoughts! I have them on occasion!

This update brought to you by Lurking Bumblebee

In this blog post I'll be showing the difference a good inking makes to a model and talking about getting the most out of your ink when you put it on. The model that is.

So first up, my snipers are coming along pretty well. After the somewhat laborious Man O' War squad, they're real easy to paint too. I'm thinking these sneaky devils might benefit from some extra spruced up bases too, like some shrubbery or tree bits around them or something. Maybe feathers for extra disguise. Cygnar are dumb enough to fall for that, right?

New Khador Klean™ gets your colours brighter than bright!
The above pic demonstrates what ink can do to really bring out depth in a model, as well as darken the overall hue and hide any minor mistakes by filling in the recesses between different colours. Normally I'd start bringing the tone back up again, but since the Widowmakers are all sneaky and stuff I'll likely be leaving them fairly dark and grungey looking.

"Okay I will shoot that ants nest but I cannot bring myself to look."
I think the main thing to remember to get the most out of an ink wash is to not be afraid of the stuff. For me (and as always your mileage, it varies), the best results are achieved when I dollop it on pretty thick and then just push it around the model, letting the ink flow and collect. A friend of mine at a recent painting afternoon was using very fast strokes which resulted in a thin spread of ink that didn't do a whole lot. When he slowed it down I think (and hopefully he agrees) that the end result was a lot more effective. IT'S SCIENCE.

Tanks and Snipers

By The Megapope   Posted at  16:57   painting 2 comments
So this weekend I got my Man O' War squad all finished up. Geeeeeeez getting those suckers varnished and based takes bloody ages. I also made a start on the Widowmaker snipers! The leader is looking pretty good. My usual tactic is to mostly finish one member of a given squad first, and make sure I'm happy with the overall look.

"I just feel like you're putting me up on a pedestal..."

This? Got it in 'Nam.

This one? Accident with a can opener. It was hell.
Battle damage! Decided to carry on with the sponge technique that I started on the Juggernaut with. I think it's getting better, one of the squad members especially has this series of smaller marks that almost look like bullet damage.

For me the main thing that made it look more realistic was being real careful with the brush work and running a wee bit of ink over the boltgun metal to give it a slightly more worn feel. Working out what looks good and what doesn't in terms of placement is also part of the wossname.

Sun? So we're not in Wellington any more then?
All based, coated, patted on the back, given a hug and ready to go. Except for decals! Reeeeeeeally need to get some decals.

I also need to work out how I'm gonna do the front arc of the bases! Vomkrieg's army looks pretty spiffy with his blue front and white runes. I've seen a few variations and haven't quite decided how I'm going to do mine yet.

The eyepatch? Pet goldfish. Vicious if only wounded.
Last but not least, the Widowmaker officer! Pretty happy with how she's looking so far. Went with a different green for the overcoat and a variety of foresty colours, then slathered the usual ink wash over the top to tone it all down. Currently working on the highlights. Also, turns out I can do okay eyes.

To do this week, get Simple Green, some pinning wire, superglue, modelling putty and possibly a stronger drill. And print all of the transfers!

Who is this beardy weirdo?

My photo
Hatching from his egg high in the glacier crowned majesty of the Himalayas, the Megapope quickly devoured his other siblings and later on his parents, for being damned cheeky. He ran a bloody campaign of terror across the wind swept steppes of the north, coming to be known as 'That Horrid Bastard' by the terrified tribes of the region. Many years later he came second in a beauty contest, won $10, didn't pass Go and didn't collect $200.
