Drop Pod! Razorback! Mark IV Marines! Aaaagh!

By The Megapope   Posted at  13:07   Ultramarines 2 comments

Hello! So I moved house and things got a bit away from me for a while but lo, I'm all set up and have new toys.

Having resolved never to paint a vehicle by brush again because a) it's laborious and awful, and b) it just doesn't come out that great unless you're willing to put in umpteen gazillion thinned out layers, I got myself some Macragge Blue spray paint from Games Workshop which retails for approximately half a million dollars here in blighted New Zealand.

I do think it was worth it though! I saved many Dan-hours and the result was immediately a huge improvement on my tactical squad rhino. Here's the drop pod with its basecoat in place...

And here's how the Razorback is doing so far. This is going to be the command vehicle for the army so I wanted to make it a bit spesh over the tactical Rhino. It's back door is going to open revealing the control console and spare bolter inside, plus it's going to have extra gold trim in places so the enemy know to concentrate fire in its general direction.

I also bought the special Forgeworld Ultramarines door set from Forgeworld, just to make the Razorback pop a bit more as a command vehicle. They're pretty great.

Not sure if you can tell from the pics but I really can't stress enough how much better it looks with a sprayed on basecoat instead of using a brush.

I also got a 5-man squad of Mark IV armour from Forgeworld's Horus Heresy range. I'm thinking of redoing a couple of my Command Squad characters and otherwise sprinkling them throughout the army along with the Mark VIs I already have.

Imitation Terminators!

By The Megapope   Posted at  14:25   Ultramarines 3 comments

So here's a finished test model of my first terminator.

Confession time: these are actually knock-off products from aliexpress.com, where you can apparently buy replicas of almost anything. A friend told me about the website so I ordered a squad out of curiosity... and turns out the imitation is as close to the real thing as makes no difference.

I realise at this point that I'm probably the last hobbyist on the planet to have discovered that you can buy cheaper knockoffs, but there you go.

The terminator pieces arrived after about 3 weeks. Not only where there no components missing, but they also sent me the close combat AND ranged weapon sets even though I only ordered the CC one.

Quality of the models were top notch; there were no defects, detail was great, plastic didn't melt or spontaneously combust when I applied paint.

So if you're unwilling to pay full GW prices I have to recommend you try aliexpress. I don't think I could have known that these weren't the real thing if they hadn't arrived out of the official packaging.

Commander repaint: Captain Sicarius

By The Megapope   Posted at  15:58   Ultramarines No comments

So I've been humming and harring over my commander character for a while, and finally decided to just turn him into Captain Sicarius, mainly because I felt he had way too much bling for some field commander lieutenant guy or whatever the hell he was.

Here's the before photo. I think he was painted close to two years ago now, so it's nice to see how much my painting has improved in that time. Frankly the highlights on him were a bit atrocious and the banner looked a bit ratty after a superglue incident.

I checked out some images of the actual Captain Sicarius model and decided (after some photoshop tests) that I didn't want to give his new banner the same red/white border. I kept it simple in theme with the other army banners, combining three decal elements from my trusty Forgeworld decal collection and painted the border an umber colour, highlighted up to yellow along the top.

I also repainted his helmet crest to the red and white stripes, gave him a plasma pistol, completely repainted his armour highlights, made the cybernetic parts of his helmet look more cyberneticky and gave him the Ultramar symbol award thingee which I had spare from the Marneus Calgar resin set.

Pretty stoked with how he turned out, I reckon he looks sufficiently Sicarius-esque. It's nice to see how my painting has come in the last two years too.

Ultramarines Devastator squad WIP

By The Megapope   Posted at  19:46   Ultramarines No comments

More Devastator progress! Whoo! Finished up the first heavy bolter and have almost finished the multi melta marine.

You'll also see that I've added a campaign badge to their legs, which I've gone and done on the tactical and assault squads too on a whim. I feel like it helps tie everything together in a weird way, weird because they're all blue with ultramarine symbols. Who even knows.

Once again the awesome decals from Forgeworld and Armorcast really help make the models a bit more interesting.

Have some pics!

Blast templates and blades

By The Megapope   Posted at  02:15   Ultramarines No comments

This week I decided to make a start on my squad of Devastators. I easily had enough spare space marine sprues to make all eight weapon options, plus of course the sergeant who'd been painted up a few months ago.

Behold, WIP of some heavy weapon fellas!

For the eagle chestpiece on this marine I tried a simpler method of just painting it brown, then painting most of each feather tip gold while leaving a small part of the inside. I then ran earthshade wash over the bits I hadn't painted gold. I think it looks really effective.

But wait, there's more! I also made a start on the Khador Manhunter, because why not. He's got his green vest on to fit in with the rest of the army. Digging how nice the black ink makes the fur trimming and fuzzy boots.

Ultramarines Rhino

By The Megapope   Posted at  14:35   Ultramarines 2 comments

My first (mostly) finished transport vehicle! Man, I gotta tell you I seriously need to get an airbrush before I try painting something like this again. Pain in the buttocks.

It took me a while to figure out how to make it look halfway decent, some advice from the Warhammer Reddit forum had me layering down some ink along the bottom to give it more depth, plus a brighter tone along the top. This would have been WAY easier with an airbrush right from the start.

I'm mostly happy with it, though I'm probably going to be touching it up for a while. But have some photos!

Rhinos and bikes, oh my

By The Megapope   Posted at  00:29   Ultramarines No comments
This poor neglected rhino transport tank has been sitting around undercoated for almost two years. The shame! Well today is your day, Rhino. Here are some work in progress pics!

The extra large sexy decals and side-door brass plague both come from Forgeworld.

Hopefully you can also make out the battle damage I'm working on, this was done with the tried and true method of using a corner of sponge to dab on black and then carefully filling it in with boltgun metal using a brush.

Also! I completed one of the four bike marines! He even has eyeballs. I'll take some better pics using the light-box soon for the gallery page.

New blog design! Khador painting! Madness reigns!

By The Megapope   Posted at  18:22   Warmachine No comments
Welcome to the shiny new Ministry of Miniatures. You've probably noticed that the blog's undergone a bit of a revamp. I was getting really, really sick of the stock-standard Blogger templates and found them very limited and a bit dated, even with a bunch of changes applied. So I ended up looking at 3rd party designs and settled on this one, originally made by MyThemeShop for Wordpress and converted for Blogger by BloggerTheme9.

There was some fiddling around to get everything the way I wanted, which was an entertaining experience with no CSS experience whatsoever. But I got there! Hurrah!

(Also I finally got around to getting a custom domain name, smurfsinspace will now be redirecting to ministryofminiatures. You don't have to change your bookmarks.)

During the meanwhilst!

Khador is still happening! Namely the Butcher, with his impressively large axe and penchant for running screaming into large groups of hapless victims. Here's some progress photos:

So shiny! So green!
BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GO-wait. Wrong game.

As always my trusty wet palette made the blending a lot easier. I used Vallejo model colours for the green, mixing together gradiants between the light and dark green. To help the paint blend together I'd also dip the brush into the water immediately after painting and carefully feather each tone step into each other.

Blatant product placement. This blog is selling out, man.

That's all for now!

Suddenly, a wild Behemoth appears!

By The Megapope   Posted at  00:37   Warmachine 1 comment

So I decided that the half finished Khador Behemoth that had been lurking sullenly around my In Tray finally deserved to be finished. It was hard work! Damn thing weighs a ton and I really wanted it to look good as the model makes a great centrepiece for a Khador army (at least one without a battle wagon or a colossal).

I'm pretty pleased with the end result, I feel like the extra effort really paid off. Glowy effects around the vents don't look too bad for a first attempt and the battle damage on the warjack's paintjob looks decent I think. Anyhoo, here's some pics.

The deffest of kopters

By The Megapope   Posted at  20:41   painting No comments
Finished the Deffkopter Ork! Might revist the model later and add some more black areas, but man I really hate highlighting black so maybe I won't. Have some pics!

An Ork and his deffkopter

By The Megapope   Posted at  17:11   painting 1 comment
The base colours, inks and some of the highlights are mainly down now on the orky deffkopter. Fairly happy with how it's looking at this stage so when I come back to it later it'll be finishing off the highlights then getting stuck into the battle damage, of which there will be lots.

Have some pics!

Who is this beardy weirdo?

My photo
Hatching from his egg high in the glacier crowned majesty of the Himalayas, the Megapope quickly devoured his other siblings and later on his parents, for being damned cheeky. He ran a bloody campaign of terror across the wind swept steppes of the north, coming to be known as 'That Horrid Bastard' by the terrified tribes of the region. Many years later he came second in a beauty contest, won $10, didn't pass Go and didn't collect $200.
